Historical child abuse charges have been levelled against a 78-year-old former elite swim coach.

A former elite swim coach will face a Queensland court on Monday after he was extradited from Western Australia and charged with child abuse offences dating back to the 1980s.

John Wright, 78, arrived in Brisbane on Friday night and was due to face court on Saturday, only for a non-urgent medical issue to delay proceedings.

He will now appear before the Brisbane magistrate’s court on Monday, where he will face a number of alleged indecent dealing offences that police allege took place between 1980 and 1986 in the Brisbane and Rockhampton areas.

Mr Wright was arrested in Western Australia on Wednesday following a Queensland Police investigation into the alleged historical abuse.

He is charged with nine counts of indecent dealing of a child, and one count of common assault.

Detectives are encouraging any other potential alleged victims or anyone else with knowledge of this matter to come forward.
